“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference.” – Elie Wiesel

Yom HaShoah is a significant day of remembrance for the Jewish community and survivors of the Holocaust and their families. It is a day of mourning and reflection and honours the bravery and memory of Holocaust victims as well as the legacy of survivors.

I was grateful I had the opportunity five years ago to attend a Holocaust education event where I heard survivor Howard Chandler speak. Many will never have the opportunity to hear the stories directly from survivors. In June 2023, the Toronto Holocaust Museum by the UJA Federation opened in North York and the THM has worked to ensure the stories of the holocaust will be shared with many future generations. My one hour visit to the THM was absolutely not enough time to take it all in.

Always remember. Learn. Reflect. Bear witness. Never forget. Never again. Never again is now.
